When will the Allergy Amulet be available for purchase?

We plan to launch pre-sales in Fall 2018, with first products shipping out in Spring 2019. Sign up for our newsletter and blog to stay current on product release dates!

How much with the Allergy Amulet cost?

The reader will cost between $100 - $250, depending on the configuration. We plan to offer premium and basic versions of both wearable and non-wearable options. Single-allergen disposable test strips will cost $1 - 3 each.

What allergens will you test for?

We plan to offer tests for the top eight most common food allergens (peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, eggs, milk, and soy) + gluten. Initially, we will launch disposable test strips for one to two allergenic ingredients.

What is the science behind the device?

Our technology is based on a novel application of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). Molecularly imprinted polymers are advanced biomaterials containing synthetic cavities that bind to target molecules, matching them in size, shape, and other molecular properties to create a lock and key fit. Our team formulates each polymer recipe to recognize a specific chemical tracer for a given allergenic ingredient. The polymers rapidly and selectively bind to trillions of target molecules, while excluding non-target molecules. Upon binding, a chemical and electrical reaction sends a signal to the reader providing a simple yes/no readout to indicate if the target allergen molecule is present.

How does the Amulet work?

Users first insert a single-use test strip into multiple areas of their food. The strip is then inserted into a sheath, which mixes the food with a buffer solution. Users will shake the sheath and then slide a chip out from the end of the disposable sheath and insert it into the Amulet reader. The reader will then make a threshold determination and alert users as to the presence or absence of the target allergenic ingredient.

How long will it take to run a test?

Our current data is showing a positive or negative test result within one minute. We expect a readout within seconds.

Our target threshold is in the low part-per-million range, which is based on academic literature on our target allergenic ingredients, food challenge data, and research from members of our scientific and medical advisory board.

How sensitive is the technology?

The Amulet reader will not require Wi-Fi or a smartphone to run a test. If users wish to connect the device to our app, we plan to offer users the ability to track and upload tests, connect with other food-allergic individuals, and store and share important information such as emergency contacts.

Will I need Wi-Fi or a smartphone for the Amulet to work?

We have designed the Allergy Amulet to capture a representative sample of the food. Accordingly, our test will only identify the presence or absence of an allergenic ingredient in the collected sample. Our device is intended to serve as a supplement, not a substitute, to the standard precautionary measures food allergic individuals would otherwise take when dining out or eating foods prepared by others (e.g., alerting the waitstaff, having emergency medicines at the ready, etc...).
